ZenFone 5z sets new record for the highest benchmark score on AnTuTu

If a recent report is anything to go by, Asus may have themselves a beast of a flagship in the ZenFone 5z. Benchmark tests are one of many measures of a powerful device and considering this is only one test result, everything should be kept within context. However, this is a promising development in the world of ZenFone.

GadgetMatch.com has an exclusive screenshot of an AnTuTu benchmark score of 274,499. This is the highest ever score on the AnTuTu benchmark app. Impressive to be sure! To give some perspective, GadgetMatch.com indicates that the Samsung Galaxy S9+ (Snapdragon 845) scored 264,769 in March 2018. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S scored a 273,741 to give further perspective.

The Snapdragon 845 in the ZenFone 5z is top of the line and this early indicator says as much. One has to wonder how the relationship between Qualcomm and Asus has benefited them in getting the most out of the processor.

The ZenFone 5z (ZS620KL) is due for a June release date so not a lot of time to wait. It shares the same design of the less robust ZenFone 5 (ZE620KL) but the 5z hardware is more premium and top end. Price has not yet been unveiled, however the current ZenFone 5 models announced so far all have incredibly low price point in comparison to the previous two years of ZenFone releases. It’s a safe bet that the ZenFone 5z is going to be priced below the flagships from every other competitor out there.

If you live outside of Asia, you won’t likely see the ZenFone 5z available to buy in June. Expect Taiwan and a few other Asian countries to get this phone first. That means you have to consider either waiting or look at buying from one of those lucky early countries.

Asus gaming phone coming? Shen says “you can expect”

Asus marked a milestone in the Philippines recently with their 100th retail store opening in that country. As part of the ZenFone 5 launch event in the Philippines, a number of Asus executives were part of a group interview. Asus CEO Jerry Shen was part of that panel and he dropped a pretty obvious hint about a possible Asus gaming smartphone.

When one of the media asked about whether Asus would ever release a gaming phone, Jerry Shen replied in a bashful way and said repeatedly, “you can expect”. You could get the sense he wanted to say more about it but obviously he couldn’t divulge details. Nothing more was shared so the timeline and price would be complete guesses at this point.

We did notice that during the Indonesia ZenFone 5 launch event there was a segement specific to gaming on the ZenFone Max Pro M1 and additionally we saw marketing materials prior to the event that targeting the gaming audience. In this sense, Asus is quite clearly showing their desires to meld gaming and mobile phones together.

So far in the past number of weeks there have been two gaming phones released or announced. Most feature unique cooling systems which is something you would expect. The question is how a cooling system could enhance battery life because as most people realize, a warm battery mean far less battery life. Asus are clever in terms of design and their strong ROG background should help them put a gaming phone above the competition.

One question does remain. How would Asus brand a gaming phone? ZenFone ROG? ZenFone Arez? Remember that stories have emerged about AMD graphic cards from Asus as being part of the new Arez brand. With ROG, that’s now going to be exlusive to Nvidia GPUs. Perhaps it’s just some new brand within ZenFone series.

Stay tuned on this one, you can expect news very soon. ZenFone gaming is about to get real folks!

Let’s not forget about the ZenFone Max M1 (ZB555KL) (ZB556KL)

With all the chatter about the ZenFone Max Pro M1 it seems that its smaller brother, the ZenFone Max M1 hasn’t gotten much love. Keep in mind that the two phones may appear as the same, but they most certainly are not. Let’s change that! It doesn’t really matter which “Max” phone you’re looking at because they have primarily long lasting battery and secondly they are the cheapest ZenFone models in the series. Those to factors are a given. So at this point, Asus appears to be branding the “ZenFone Max M1”, “ZenFone Max Plus M1”, and “ZenFone Max Pro M1”. The only question we have is what does the “M1” signify. Is that “model 1”?

If you’re wondering about the ZenFone Max M1 vs. ZenFone Max Pro M1, price is the primary selling point. If price and battery life are key ingredients to you and specs are less important, then this phone is worth looking at.

Compared to the ZenFone Max Pro M1, the ZenFone Max M1 comes with a less power hungry processor (Snapdragon 430) and a less power hungry display (1440 x 720). It’s smaller at 5.5-inches, and because of that, it’s got a smaller 4000mAh battery inside. On the operating side of things, the ZenFone Max M1 comes with ZenUI 4.0 rather than the pure Android experience that comes on the ZenFone Max Pro M1 model.

Lazada Indonesia sells out of ZenFone Max Pro M1 (ZB602KL) in minutes

We checked the Lazada Indonesia product page at precisely 11am which is the time you could buy a ZenFone Max Pro M1. Well that fun lasted a matter of seconds by our estimation. We got a “product not found” result. Then on the homepage slider this appeared:

We don’t know how many units were available for sale but we do know that on a number of selected days, the ZenFone Max Pro M1 is being sold at a discount during flash sales. This was one of those instances.

Here is one question that this leads us to. Is Asus going to be able to produce enough of these phones for the global demand. It’s clear to us (and most other people) that this phone is going to sell like crazy. This is going to be a test for Asus and their production abilities and it’s a warning to consumers. If you want one of these, then get onto pre order lists now or when they first come up. Otherwise you might potentially be waiting a while. We promise to track supplies of the ZenFone Max Pro M1 and advise you on options as we move forward.

Also keep in mind there are a few variants right now and there is also a smaller brother, the ZenFone Max M1 which offers 4000mAh battery and a 5.5-inch display which maintains a rather astonishing price point as well. However it does seem that the 6-inch ZenFone Max Pro M1 is the popular choice. So far Indonesia is the only market with a chance to buy one. India is up next and this is fair warning that it’s likely to sell out quickly in that market as well. Crowd reactions from the price announcements has been indicative of the brisk sales of the ZenFone 5 series regardless of which particular model we’re talking about.
