Redmi Note 5 Pro vs. ZenFone Max Pro – Comparison

According to Asus, they specifically looked at the best selling phones in certain markets and created a product that would beat those competitors in every different category. For during the India unveil of the ZenFone Max Pro M1, Asus mentioned and clearly showed how they beat the Redmi Note 5 Pro and Xiaomi Redmi Note 5. The goal is clearly to take over the #1 spot and Asus didn’t leave anything to chance and you will see.

Let’s take a look at some of the slides and information that Asus displayed during the unveil event in India.

Battery Comparison

The ZenFone Max Pro comes with fast charge and a 5000mAh battery in comparison to the Redmi Note 5 Pro that has a 4000mAh battery. Charging times are interesting because the ZenFone can charge in 2.7hrs whereas the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro and its smaller battery takes 3.22hrs according to Asus. The claim is that the ZenFone Max Pro is 30 minutes faster than the Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Video playback was also mentioned at the Asus unveil event. The ZenFone Max Pro with a Snapdragon SDM636 and 5000mAh battery gets 18.2 hours of playback using the hotstar streaming app and YouTube playback will last for 19.5 hours. By comparison, the Redmi Note 5 gets 15.8 hours for hotstar and 16.7 hours with YouTube streaming.

Performance

Benchmark performance shows that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro with its SDM636 processor is slightly less robust in terms of Antutu overall scores at 112702 whereas the ZenFone Max Pro fetches a result of 116618. The Redmi Note 5 and its SDM625 fetches a benchmark score of 75880. So boiling it down, the ZenFone Max Pro get 1.03x the performance benchmark result of the Redmi Note 5 Pro and 1.54x the results of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5.

Sim Card / MicroSD

Asus has a better solution to the microSD/SIM card slot. The ZenFone Max Pro has a “triple slot” which means you don’t have to compromise. You can put 2 SIM cards plus a MicroSD card all at the same time. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro has only two slots so you can either have 2 SIM cards or 1 SIM card if you want to have a MicroSD. Size of microSD is also better on the ZenFone Max Pro M1 which has a 2TB max whereas the Redmi Note 5 Pro has a 128GB max.

Price reactions at ZenFone Max Pro M1 unveil events

We are still trying to digest what just happened. Judging by initial reactions to the price unveil for the ZenFone Max Pro, we’re not alone in the astonishment. There are a number of words you can use to describe our reaction. Amazed. Shocked. Confused. Bewildered. Happy.

The journey of the ZenFone series had be interesting in terms of pricing strategy. Frankly that’s part of the reason we are experiencing “shock and awe” right now. If  you look back at ZenFone 3 and ZenFone 4 launches in most countries, those events spoke volumes on what people thought of the price points. Dead air. Crickets. Silence. The prices were not what people were expecting or wanting given how competitively priced the ZenFone 2 series was. Typically the slide during the presentation when the prices are unveiled cause cheers and or clapping but that wasn’t really the case over the past couple of years with the ZenFone launch events.

Words are just that. But how about a visual of the reaction from the crowd at the ASUS Indonesia launch event? This reaction was for the ZenFone Max M1:

That’s out take, but what about other people? What are the potential customers saying about the price point that was unveiled. Pure Android One ZenFone – ZenFone Max Pro (M1)

Asus is literally going all-out with this years ZenFone 5 launch. Now we’re looking at a pure Android experience aka Android One with the new ZenFone Max Pro (M1). This is about to happen officially with the India launching coming up. Some leaked renders have all but confirmed that Android One is part of the ZenFone 5 Max Pro which we believe is the model ZB556KL.

Asus in their latest ZenUI have reduced the bloat more than ever and have increased the performance. There is a lot to like in the latest iteration of ZenUI but if you ask the general public, most likely they will desire a pure Android experience above all else.

So from the perspective of listening to the user base, creating an Android One model of the ZenFone makes a smart business move. In combination with a great price point and Asus could seriously make a big rebound in many markets with the launch of the ZenFone Max Pro (M1).

Our feeling is that this new model could strike a serious triple threat to the competition. First, huge battery. Second, cheap price. Third, pure Android OS. Those three factors could just be the ticket that Asus was hoping for. That said, brand recognition is still going to be a challenge in some markets.

Stay tuned for the full details of the ZenFone Max Pro (M1).
