No big size Zenfone 4 models at launch. Zenfone 4s perhaps?

Asus is going the way of the iPhone, at least during the first phase of Zenfone 4 models. Size wise that is. The largest iPhone is the Plus model at 5.5-inches and similarly, the Zenfone 4 launch will see a 5.5-inch maximum size according to what we’ve seen and read.

We do know from the Asus CEO at an investors conference that there will be a Zenfone 4s which will be the next top premium model. As Asus sees it, there is the Zenfone 3 Deluxe, then the Zenfone AR, and then the Zenfone 4s.

What we can say with virtual certainty is that there will be 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch models for the Zenfone 4 when it is announced August 17th. A 5.5-inch equals Apple’s biggest offering and the 5.7-inch sized Zenfone models may be a thing of the past. Or at least they will be coming later.

The 6.9-inch Zenfone 3 Ultra does not appear to have a model in this next generation. It’s possible however that the Zenfone 4s will come in a wide range of sizes including something that big. Personally? I hope there is still a big model coming because I want the real estate for the display. Maybe it didn’t sell. Or perhaps not bringing the Zenfone 3 Ultra to the US and North America was a mistake. A 6.9-inch smartphone in North America would fill a niche or void and because of that, it may have actually sold better than other models simply because it wasn’t competing with Samsung and Apple on that size.

Reasoning? Perhaps the extra AMOLED screen by going 5.7-inches on a Pro version comes down to cost. The costs for AMOLED displays has gone up because of the huge demand right now. Less supply means higher price. Or perhaps Asus found feedback from customers was more positive from the slightly smaller size. Or perhaps Asus sees the #1 smartphone manufacturer following a set of sizes and if they are successful with that, then perhaps it’s worth following as well.

So if we’re right, and 5.5-inches is the biggest offering at launch, will you be disappointed?

Zenfone AR now available in US and Canada – $599 unlocked base model

If you’re looking for a top-end smartphone that has unique qualities, the Zenfone AR is certainly worth a look. Prior to this release, the Zenfone 3 Deluxe (ZS5701KL) was the top dog. Whelp, it’s time to move over Mr. Deluxe, there’s a new sheriff in town.

You have two choices here. You can go the unlocked route or you can get the Zenfone AR through Verizon.

Premium phone, means premium phone. Keep in mind some price comparisons in the US at Verizon. If you were to buy a Google Pixel XL, you’re looking at $769 outright. For an old Samsung S7, you’re looking at $576. An iphone 7+  goes for $769. The LG G6 goes for $672. Keep these price comparisons in mind especially considering the specs and features of the Zenfone AR.

If you want to look outside of Verizon, you can choose between two different models. We list the configurations and prices with links below as well.

US Verizon: 128GB Version – 24 months @ $27/month or $648 retail price

US Amazon.com: $599 unlocked 64GB storage / $699 unlocked 128GB storage

Canada: Available for $915 unlocked 128GB storage from NCIX

Digitimes report claims there are three Zenfone 4 models to come August 17th

Digitimes is a terrific and most times accurate source for Asus news. With the August 17th event coming in Taiwan, Digitimes has graced the globe with a few nuggets. Perhaps some of these tidbits are out there already, but this gives the existing information a bit more credibility.

So there are to be three models coming, making 4 in total including the already announced Zenfone 4 Max. A 5.7-inch Zenfone 4 Pro (already spotted in the wild), a dual lens main model Zenfone 4 (ZE554KL) and entry level priced Zenfone 4 Selfi Pro.

Digitimes suggests that Asus is gearing up for around 8 million units for the second half of 2017. This detail is said to come from “Taiwan’s handset supply chain”.  This report says that in 2015 Asus shipped 20 million units, in 2016 shipped over 10 million units and in 2017 they are expected to ship 15 million units.

Digitimes reports that Asus claims the Zenfone 4 series has top end hardware, excellent designs, and high price to performance ratios.

So are you happy with 3 models? It does sound like no super phablet type Zenfone 4 like the Zenfone 3 Ultra. There is still a Zenfone 4S coming, and it’s quite possible that could be coming to take on the new iPhone in the Fall 2017. It’s unclear if the Zenfone 4S could even come in 2018 similar to how the Zenfone 3 Zoom came out in 2017 prior to the launch of the next generation models.

Zenfone 3 Max (ZC520TL) gets Android Nougat 7.0 update

This is going to make a lot of Zenfone 3 Max (ZC520TL) owners happy. You can now get the Android Nougat 7.0 update!

You can initiate this update by going into your system settings, scroll down to system updates, then press check update. You should be good to go from there!

Version: ZC520TL_WW_14.10.1707.46

Release Date: 2017/08/01

This is one of the last Zenfone 3 models to get the Android Nougat update, but it’s also the cheapest phone of the bunch. Asus did eventually get to it and hopefully it’s a solid release. Expect a few tweaks (updates) in the near future to squash any bugs that may arise.

Feedback is welcome in the comment section!

First official photo of new Zenfone 4 model

As part of the unveiling of Gong Yoo, the Zenfone 4 brand ambassador, Asus is giving the world their first official look at a new Zenfone 4 model. Did ya notice it or not?

It’s painfully obvious right now that Asus is coming in hot and heavy with the camera prowess for the Zenfone 4 series. In that sense, we can’t say the dual lens rear shown above whether it’s the recent “in the wild” Zenfone 4 Pro. The mainstream Zenfone 4 (ZE554KL) is certainly a candidate to show off in a press release style advertisement. Would Asus show off the most premium and expensive model in their first photo?

The party is just getting started so stay tuned!
