Asus expects to hit annual smartphone shipments of 20 million units

Some recent financial figures have been reported by Asus and with that information has come some details on their smartphone shipments and expectations.

Digitimes is reporting that Asus shipped around 8 million smartphones in the first half, 5.5 million in Q3, and they are expecting to ship around 6.5 to 7.5 million units in Q4. If these numbers hold, then Asus would make it to 20 million units sold in the year.

Jerry Shen, Asus CEO, spoke at the most recent Asus investors conference and he explained a bit of the Zenfone price strategy and that they are meeting their goals with the 3rd generation release. Shen said that with the Zenfone 4 they will make a big push to increase sales which sounds like the pricing should remain similar to the 3rd generation Zenfone.

Asus is expected to show off a new AR Zenfone model at CES 2017 which will be Google Tango certified. Shen also mentioned that the Zenfone 4 will be unveiled some time in Q2, which means a likely and traditional Computex showing. The only details shared by Shen so far is that the 4th generation Zenfones will have enhanced cameras.

Sweden finally gets their official Zenfone 3 launch – Pre orders begin!

Asus is not done! Sweden has just now gotten their official Zenfone 3 release and you can pre order right away. There are three models available: Zenfone 3 Deluxe, Zenfone 3, and Zenfone 3 Max. Be happy Sweden because you do get the Zenfone 3 Deluxe Special Edition which is a 128GB storage model!

Here are the prices:

  • SEK 7990 – Zenfone 3 Deluxe Special Edition
  • SEK 6990 – Zenfone 3 Deluxe
  • SEK 4490 – Zenfone 3 (ZE520KL) – 5.2-inch / 4GB RAM / 64GB Storage
  • SEK 3990 – Zenfone 3 (ZE520KL) – 5.2-inch / 3GB RAM / 32GB Storage
  • SEK 2990 – Zenfone 3 Max (ZC553KL) – 5.5-inch

As with other markets, we’re already spotting some confusion about model specs, especially around that Special Edition model. It’s apparently the Snapdragon 821 but we have already spotted one listing as being Snapdragon 820. Be careful out there!

Asus.com gets official product page up for gigantic Zenfone Go (ZB690KG)

Move over Zenfone 3 Ultra. Take your 6.8-inches and get outta here! There is a new sheriff in town (size only) in the 6.9-inch Zenfone Go. To be clear we’re just having fun a bit on the mention of the Zenfone 3 Ultra because this 6.9-inch Zenfone Go is super ultra budget and has meager specs in comparison to the main Zenfone 3 line-up.

So Asus did take the wraps off this new Zenfone Go during the Indonesia Zenvolution event but it has been a long while without any new information or official pages. So now is the time we can dig deeper on this rather unique offering.

Let’s look at the specs:

  • Android 5.1
  • 1GB RAM
  • 1024 x 600 resolution
  • Qualcomm quad-core processor
  • 8GB storage
  • 8MP rear / 2MP front cameras
  • microSD card up to 128GB (SDXC)
  • 3480mAh

Asus also just took the wraps of a new ZenPad C 7.0 (Z171KG) which is eerily similar to this Zenfone Go. So like we said, this Zenfone Go is ultra budget with a low resolution screen, 1GB RAM and 8GB storage. Keep in mind too that this storage can be expanded via a microSD card.

Drool over this new Zenfone 3 Ultra video from Asus

Asus has been prolific in terms of releasing hands-on and promotional videos showcasing their Zenfone 3 models. We are now being graced with a new Zenfone 3 Ultra (ZU680KL) video which is an “all you need to know” hands-on.

So if you’re reading this and you’re from North America, I’m sorry. You cannot get the Zenfone 3 Ultra in the US or Canada and there is really no hope of it coming at a later date. You could get an international version but you wouldn’t be getting 4G LTE speeds.

The fact is the Zenfone 3 Ultra is one heck of a beauty. We’ve heard from a great many people wanting to see this phone come to the US and frankly we agree in a big way. We can hope that the next generation of the Ultra makes it to North America but Asus may feel the phone is too niche for the market in the US and Canada. We say it’s unique and it will sell because there is nothing else like it!

Zenfone 4 coming in Q2 2017

According to Jerry Shen, Asus CEO, the Zenfone 4 is coming in Q2 2017. In case you are wondering, Q2 (quarter 2) covers the months of April, May, June. As you might know, Computex 2017 is June 1 which is where Asus loves to unveil their Zenfone products. It won’t launch then unless Asus changes up their previous launch timelines and strategies. The Zenfone 3 was a late launch, so expect the Zenfone 4 pre orders to be closer to that expected Computex 2017 unveiling.

With the most recent Asus investors conference on November 11, some details about the Zenfone 3 launch have come to light as well.

So what do we know about the Zenfone 4? Jerry Shen suggests the new models will have “enhanced cameras”. What does that mean? We literally have no idea. No other features were mentioned in the article.

If you are hoping for a price reduction with the Zenfone 4, making it more like the Zenfone 2 pricing, you will likely be disappointed. Keep in mind nothing has been said about Zenfone 4 prices at this point. however, during the investors conference, Shen did discuss the strategy in terms of elevating price in the marketplace from Zenfone 2 to Zenfone 3. He says that the Zenfone 4 will be about increasing sales volume.

So in other words, it appears there was some short term pain for long term gain. People haven’t been happy about the Zenfone 3 pricing, but it’s unclear whether Asus will waiver on this pricing strategy. Also keep in mind that Asus still is able to provide top end premium phones that beat the pricing of the big players like Apple and Samsung.
