Kernel source code confirms 6.4-inch display on ZenFone 7 (ZS670KS)

The only tweets happening these days sound pretty much all the same. When is the ZenFone 7 announcement? We don’t have that answer but we do try and provide news and tidbits that come out along the way here.

An interesting news story takes a look into the kernel source code of the ROG Phone 3 which happens to reference the ZenFone 7 (ZS670KS) as well. From this, specs can be verified. A few interesting ones to be sure.

It is widely rumored that ASUS will release two ZenFone 7 models which will include a “pro” model along with their typical model. The EEC filing indicates the two different models, as well as the recent Bluetooth certification. We only say rumored because nothing official has been said by ASUS about the existence of a ZenFone 7 Pro (ZS671KS).

Regarding this recent news story, they are able to confirm that the ZenFone 7 (not the pro model) comes with a Snapdragon 865 5G CPU. This has already been established via Geekbench results, but it’s confirmation none the less.

A big finding here which squashed the ridiculous misinformation circulating the web is that no, the ZenFone 7 does NOT have a 6.7-inch display. In fact, the story indicates that the display is actually 6.4-inches which is what the ZenFone 6 had. This makes much more sense!

Not surprisingly, it appears the ZenFone 7 (ZS670KS) is coming with an LCD display of 2340 x 1080 resolution. What we hope for is that the expected ZenFone 7 Pro (ZS671KS) comes with an AMOLED display but no evidence has been found thus far.

It’s curious to see that the news story indicates there is no in-screen fingerprint sensor. This would likely mean the same rear fingerprint reader that the ZenFone 6 employed, although this is guess work on our part. Is there any way ASUS could put a sensor on the front? Doubtful.

Rounding out the findings, the ZenFone 7 will make use of the triple slot SIM tray that also has a slot for an SD card. The microSD card slot means that a cheaper option might be possible with internal 64GB or 128GB storage, allowing for up to 2TB of external storage.

So that pretty much wraps up the findings from the kernel source code. Not a lot of surprises but at least the 6.7-inch display nonsense can be corrected by many websites out there. The ZenFone 7 (ZS670KL) is going to have a 6.4-inch display. Got it? Great.

What’s the hold-up on the ZenFone 7 announcement?

We wait. It’s well past a normal release date and ASUS continues to remain mum on any marketing around a ZenFone 7 unveil event. We have a few thoughts and theories to share while we wait.

Something occurred to us today. What if ASUS hasn’t decided yet on their final ZenFone 7 pricing? This isn’t too far fetched to consider.

The fact is, ASUS isn’t going budget this time around. So a wise move strategically speaking would be to wait and see what the competition is doing. Even though rumors suggest the ZenFone 7 will be cheaper than the ROG Phone 3, ASUS still needs to adjust according to the competition and try to come with slightly cheaper prices which has been quite typical in previous years.

ASUS most likely has their eyes on the flagships from Samsung and Apple. With those devices being delayed or slowed up, ASUS has a bit of extra time to work with. There is however, some clarity emerging.

We see today that Samsung held their event and as a result, they released their pricing on the new Note series. Cheap is not one word that I would use. With those prices now public, ASUS something to work with.

The reason we mention pricing and Samsung’s event today is because this will likely move things along. Knowing these Samsung flagship prices gives ASUS more confidence in their pricing strategy. Certainly knowing some Samsung pricing allows ASUS to make adjustments as they see fit.

Ultimately we believe the hold-up on the ZenFone 7 announcement is because of how slowly the competition has been moving. Even with Google’s 4a, that still isn’t the product that ASUS is competing against. If the competition isn’t divulging details and pricing yet, why should ASUS be at the front end? It’s not a prudent business move to spill the beans first.

Also with everything we normally check on, it does seem that the ZenFone 7 release date is a ways off still. Indicators are not guarantees, but it now seems like September pre orders is more likely. We’ve been tracking almost all the ZenFone releases and when we spot certain developments, we see a launch imminent. However, the ZenFone 7 is not giving us much these days which is definitely surprising.

We did believe that ASUS would have some teaser for this week, but we’ve been wrong so far. A couple days left this week, but we like to put our money on a Monday or Wednesday teaser. Going into a weekend isn’t typical of ASUS, so look to the start of a week for some type of teaser and unveil event date.

Bluetooth certification confirms two ZenFone 7 models ZS670KS and ZS671KS

ASUS has been more than a little coy when it comes to the ZenFone 7 release. Trusty certifications are always reliable for gleaming some information. What we have is further proof of two different ZenFone 7 models.

August 1 sees a new listing on the Bluetooth certification pages, showing the ASUS_I002D which also lists the ZS670KS and ZS671KS. This is confirmation of what everyone wants to know.

ZenFone 7 = ZS670KS

ZenFone 7 Pro = ZS671KS

It’s about as simple as that and now it’s a slam dunk that we have our two ZenFone 7 models. Nowhere to hide now! This is the second certification listing showing these two models.

What you likely want to know is what this listing really means when it comes to a release date. For an official unveil, we expect late August to be the date. If you are in Europe, expect pre orders to roll out almost immediately, along with some Asian markets. We hope you visit us often during the lead-up and post-announcement because we will give you all the ZenFone 7 pre order and buy now options that exist.

A release date for North America aka US and Canada will come after that. Wait for the FCC listing before getting too excited about buying one off a store shelf in Canada or the United States. In general for US and Canada it’s more than a month after seeing the FCC listing and consider there hasn’t even been an ROG Phone 3 listing at FCC yet but the phone is available to buy already in Europe and Asia. North America is likely still a low priority market for ASUS when it comes to mobile phones unfortunately.

The ZenFone 7 Pro is going to be quite fascinating because so much is unknown. We can hope for an AMOLED display as that would be the most substantial upgrade that many consumers would be happy about. There can be some other “pro” benefits but aside from a faster processor we can’t think of anything better than an upgrade from LCD to AMOLED.

Price wise? Do not expect cheap models this year. Expect the ZenFone 7 Pro to be a Samsung/Apple flagship price point. Rumors have suggested the ZenFone 7 will be cheaper than the ROG Phone 3 which is not exactly breaking news. Either option will be expensive but well worth it considering the flip camera module is apparently part of this years design as well.

We expect bigger news from ASUS come August 3. Apple pushed their event into October so ASUS is likely feeling less pressure to get their next generation model out into the market. A smooth release means having enough units to ship and that takes time. Slow and steady works for us. That said, can we please see a render sometime soon?
